The incident took place on the ninth floor of Ganga Jamuna Apartments at Shakespeare Sarani in Kolkata. The body of the deceased was found by her son in her bedroom, who rushed her to SSKM hospital, where the deceased, Renuka Chowdhury was declared dead.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, South, Akash Magharia said that while all the possible angles leading to the death of the woman are being explored, they have detained a former driver of the family from Dhakuni.

The deceased woman's son said in his statement to the police that the door to her bedroom was ajar and a few valuables, as well as a mobile phone belonging to the deceased, was missing. This lead police to question all the people working in the building and they have sought the expertise of the Forensic department to understand what may have led to the "smothering" of the deceased.

As per the media reports, Chowdhury lived with her younger son who was a Chartered Accountant. The woman's older son lives in the United States. An investigation officer informed that the family has a full-time attendant, who was sleeping in the staff quarters when the incident took place. The elderly woman's son had gone to the terrace to play badminton at 5:45 AM and came back at 7:30 AM. On arrival, he went to check on his mother and found her lying unresponsive on her bed, bleeding from her nose.

The son alleged that the scene looked like someone had "entered the home forcefully". The 28/1 Shakespeare Sarani building has 80 apartments. The police have seized the CCTV footage to follow that angle and an officer said that no forced entry could be deduced.

Although the officer added, two people were seen moving on the same floor as the deceased house at night. One of them was the driver, who has been detained.
