Denmark is the latest European country to ban burqas in public places. The country will join the ranks of Austria, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Bulgaria and the German state of Bavaria in banning full-face Islamic veils.

To ‘un-veil’ women from this age-old tradition, Danish parliamentarians have decided to organize a formal vote to ban the burqa

Jacob Ellemann-Jensen of Denmark’s liberal party said: “This is not a ban on religious clothing, this is a ban on masking.”

On October 6, Denmark announced the burqa ban plan. The country is enacting a law to enable women to go outside without the burqa and niqab, the full-face coverings for Muslim women.

Denmark's Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen has termed the legislation as a "masking ban", reports DWHe is batting for women and their right to wear what they want.

"We are ready to ban the burqa if that is what it takes... But there are some dilemmas, not least with regards to how such a ban would be enforced," Social Democrats' leader Mette Fredriksen said at a parliamentary debate on the issue. He said a lot of Muslim women vote against a veil.

It has been observed that in the name of religion, the burqa culture has been oppressing the human mind in various corners of this world. Women stay mute fearing that not wearing the burqa may hurt religious sentiments. It's high time women were allowed to dress as they want to and not be told to follow religious diktats.
