Shameful, Will Not Tolerate: Kejriwal On Delhi Gangrape Survivor Garlanded With Slippers

Authorities in Delhi have taken cognisance of an incident from Shahdara involving a gangrape survivor garlanded with slippers and shamed publicly by locals.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, following the video of a gangrape survivor garlanded with slippers going viral on social media, issued a strong statement Thursday, calling the incident "shameful." As per a video that emerged this week, a woman in the national capital's Shahdara district was allegedly tonsured and paraded with a garland of slippers around her neck after she was gangraped. Her face was also blackened.

"This is very shameful. How did the criminals get so much courage? I urge the Union Home Minister and the Lieutenant Governor to instruct the police to take strict action, pay attention to the law and order situation. Delhiites will not tolerate such heinous crime and criminals at any cost," Kejriwal said in a tweet, translated from Hindi.

A group of illegal liquor sellers is reported to be behind the gangrape of the 20-year-old woman. Swati Maliwal, chief of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), issued a notice to the Delhi police, calling for arrests in the case and ensuring security for the woman.

As per reports, the disturbing incident of the rape survivor being publicly shamed occurred Wednesday. The woman was allegedly abducted from her house and raped by three local men. "While they were gangraping her, the women present therein were instigating the men to rape her," a release by DCW states.

The viral video shows a crowd of women ushering the rape survivor in question around a locality while she is jeered at.

The survivor told Maliwal, who reportedly met her in person, that locals "beat her up brutally, shaved her head, blackened her face and made her walk around the neighbourhood with a garland of slippers and shoes."

Reports suggest the matter relates to a personal enmity between locals of Shahdara. The survivor's sister claimed a local boy died by suicide last year. He was allegedly in love with the 20-year-old woman. His family pinned the blame of his death on her.

As per latest updates from ANIthe Shahdara Deputy Commissioner of Police said they nabbed four accused persons in the case and further investigation is underway. The survivor underwent a medical examination and is being given counselling.
