Delhi Govt. Directs MCDs, Departments To Have Separate Toilets For Transgender Persons

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) in its annual budget of 2021-22 has also decided to construct public toilets for the third gender persons in Delhi.

Separate toilets for transgenders:  The government of Delhi directed its departments, municipal corporations, district authorities and all autonomous bodies to have a separate toilet facility for transgender persons in their offices.

The government also stated in case the toilets cannot be built immediately, the toilet facility for persons with disability(PwD) can be used by the transgender people temporarily.

A government order said, “In compliance with the provisions of section 22 of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 for ensuring adequate welfare measures for transgender persons, all public buildings under all the departments, autonomous bodies, PSUs, corporations and local bodies of Government of NCT Delhi are hereby directed to create separate identified public toilet facilities for transgender persons.”

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) in its annual budget of 2021-22 decided to construct public toilets for the third gender persons in Delhi. According to the order, the toilets should be built within two years.

The social welfare department in its last week's order had said that such toilets will have display symbols for both PwD and transgender people. The trans persons can also use male and female toilets depending on the gender they identify with.

The order has been sent to department secretaries, district magistrates, Delhi Cantonment board CEO and all others.
