A 45-year-old woman named Shanti Devi and her son Praveen were arrested on Monday. According to the police, the duo stole jewellery from women by cheating them and engaging them in conversations. They were arrested after police raided their home in Raghu Birnagar in West Delhi.

The police also claimed the two had been committed the crime with the help of an associate, who is still at large.

The crime was to light after a woman who was allegedly one of the targets of the mother-son duo filed a complaint against them on April 9 at Malviya Nagar police station.

In the FIR, the woman accused Shanti Devi of cheating her in a hospital where the complainant was present to see check on her sister-in-law. She alleged that Devi engaged her in a conversation and stole her earrings, finger ring and pendant set.

South Delhi's Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Kumar said, "Based on the complaint, we registered a case under section 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code and initiated an investigation."

He added that the accused persons were tracked after looking at CCTV footage of a nearby place. The police then reached Raghu Birnagar to conduct raids.

According to the police, the accused woman confessed her crime and admitted that she had been stealing jewellery from women with her son and other associates. The DCP said that the duo sold the stolen jewellery to unknown people.

The woman was presented in court along with her son after the arrest, she sent to judicial custody and her son was given one-day police custody in order to track the associate and recover the stolen items, the officer said.
