This would mean that the women will be given more responsibilities in preventing street crimes as well as crimes against women and children. Until now only male officers were appointed in the beats and sub-divisions looking after all 15 districts.

Shweta Chauhan, DCP, spoke to Indian Express and said," We have now started a pathbreaking initiative by deploying all-women staff in earmarked beats and divisions of every police station of Central district for traditional policing to curb every type of crime and ensure safety and security of citizens." The officer added that the women personnel will be referred to as Prashakti Beat Staff. The Delhi Police has also appointed Veera Squad of Women police officers who will be deployed for patrolling so that street crime and crimes against women and children can be controlled.

" They will perform intensive and visible patrolling at sensitive areas on Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs), Quick Response Teams (QRTs), motorcycles, scooty to control crime and make streets safer for residents of Delhi,” she said.

Chauhan added that the motive behind constituting Prashakti Beat Staff and Veera Squad is to bring women officers to the forefront. Crime prevention and detection which used to be considered male bastions will now have the participation of women officers at every level of policing.

"We are hoping that they will play an important role in prevention, detection and investigation of crimes like robbery, snatching, pick-pocketing, burglary and organised crime,” she added. Before this, women officers were only handling cases of crimes against women and children and sensitisation of victims in such cases. They have now been deployed in the Central district to deal with hardcore crimes and criminals. Chauhan said that woman officers have also been posted in cyber cells and special staff of the Central district.

One 'Pink Booth' has also been set up in the Karol Bagh area of Central Delhi which will be run by women officers. The booth is supposed to address the complaints of women and girls and take legal action after lodging the complaint.

Chauhan said, "We have made this booth to provide a safe complaint redressal mechanism for women and girls in busy market areas that they frequent."
