Where are we headed as a society?

In 2023, and continuing into the present year, the disturbing trend of violence and killing perpetrated against intimate partners highlights a harsh reality where women often find themselves victimized by the very men they trust and love. According to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1 in 3 women worldwide—equivalent to 30%—have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence during their lifetime. The majority of this violence constitutes intimate partner violence.

Globally, nearly one-third—27%—of women aged 15–49 who have been in a relationship report experiencing some form of physical and/or sexual violence from their intimate partner. Reviewing these statistics alongside headlines of news stories, such as the aforementioned case or the infamous Shraddha Walker case, serves as a stark reminder of the perilous times we live in. Women find themselves unsafe even within the confines of their own homes, at the hands of their partners, making us reflect on the direction of our society.
