Decrease In Anaemic Women In Hyderabad
Anaemia is the most common condition detected in women as they don't consume a proper balanced diet. However, a decrease in the number of menstruating anaemic women has been recorded post a special drive in Karimnagar, Hyderabad. To counter anaemia a special drive called 'Anaemia Mukt Karimnagar' was carried out. The purpose of this drive was to detect anaemic women in menstruating age brackets and to reduce the number of such cases.

The drive was carried out by the district administration of Karimnagar. This special drive has helped reduce the number of menstruating anaemic women from last year's November count of 2490 to this year's count of 595. 2021's National Family Health Survey 5 (NFHS-5) report recorded that 61.1% of women between the menstruating age bracket of 15 to 49 were anaemic in Karimnagar.

After assessing this information RV Karnan with his team obtained 700 anaemia-detecting kits. These on-the-go kits were designed to detect anaemia outside of laboratories, their operation time being 10 minutes.

The Additional Collector of Karimnagar, Garima Agarwal states that these on-the-go anaemic kits were given to auxiliary nurses, ASHA workers, and midwives. They went from house to house with these kits to detect anaemia. The first round of surveys was completed by the team by November last year. Haemoglobin levels of 2.35 lakh women were recorded in this survey.

The on-the-go test kits used to detect anaemia were combined with an application called ‘A-Shield’. ‘A-Shield’ has been developed by the start-up company ‘Team Up’. This application allowed the survey team to know the regions where anaemic levels were the highest.

The survey results found that nearly 1.2 lakh women suffered from moderate anaemia which coincided with the NFHS-5 report.

Acting on this result, the survey team provided menstruating moderately anaemic women with folic acid tablets. Women with mild anaemia were counselled. Women with severe anaemia were immediately sent to hospitals for medical treatment by doctors.

The district administration of Karimnagar has decided on beginning the second phase of its survey to check if the anaemic levels of moderately anaemic women have been lowered.
