Women in the Congress party are a truly a force to reckon with. Protesting BJP MP Vinay Katiyar’s sexist comment against Priyanka Gandhi, the Cong women on Friday put their strength behind Gandhi and went to the BJP office in New Delhi shouting slogans against the ruling party and demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi dismiss Katiyar. They also demanded an apology from Katiyar for his comment.

Katiyar had sparked off a controversy when he remarked that there are “more beautiful women star campaigners than Priyanka Gandhi” in the Congress party.

Congress leaders said that Katiyar’s comment shows the party’s attitude towards women in the country. They also claimed that the comment is an insult to womanhood.

“PM should sack Katiyar from the BJP. Katiyar should also tender apology for his remarks against Priyanka Gandhi,” said Barkhla Shukhla Singh, President of Delhi Mahila Congress, reported Indian Express.

While there are a great number of women in the Indian parliament and we also have women in leadership roles in the leading parties, there is still a lot of sexism and misogyny in politics. Gandhi comes from one of the biggest political parties and most prominent families in the country and for a BJP MP to comment on her beauty instead of her efforts is demeaning and degrading.

Gandhi has been playing an active role in this year’s UP election apart from being Congress’ campaign manager like past years. It was because of her participation that the SP and Congress alliance took place. However, she will only be seen campaigning in her home constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareli which belong to her brother, Rahul Gandhi and mother, Sonia Gandhi, respectively.
