The Coimbatore police booked a 52-year-old police officer for allegedly sexually harassing a 30-year-old transwoman on the pretext of conducting an inquiry.

According to reports, the transwoman filed a complaint with the police on November 6 claiming that she lost her mobile phone. A police constable named Moovendhan Velpari reportedly visited her residence on the same day claiming he wanted to conduct an inquiry into her case. He then allegedly sexually harassed and also threatened her not to talk to anyone about the incident.

The transwoman lodged a complaint with the police with the help of a local transgender association. As per reports, the police booked Moveendhan under section 294 (b) of the Indian Penal Code which mentions punishment when an accused either utters, recites, sings any obscene words or ballad in or near any public place. The man was also charged with section 18 (d) of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights ) Act 2019. As per reports, he was later suspended. The police have launched a hunt to nab the absconding policeman.

The National Council of Education and Research (NCERT) has taken down the manual on inclusion of the transgender and gender non-conforming children at schools from its website. The move came after the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) sent a complaint that it received from a group called Legal Rights Observatory.
The complaint was sent by NCPCR to NCERT on November 2 seeking “comments and appropriate action in rectifying anomalies in the document” from the organisation within a week. Although the council has not reverted back on the complaint, news reports claim that the manual was taken down from the website.
