In a bid to improve the adverse sex ratio of Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched a scheme titled the ‘Mukhbir Yojana’ or the informer scheme to curb the menace of female foeticide. It also aims to improve the sex ratio of the state.

The scheme involves providing incentives of up to Rs Two lakh to anyone who would intimate the state authorities about the involvement of any doctor or medical staff in pre-natal sex determination and sex-based abortions.

The scheme has been launched under the Pre-Conception Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PCPNDT) Act. Besides launching the scheme, the Chief Minister has also launched 181 as Women's Helpline and started 64 rescue vans in a lot of districts.

This concrete measure to elevate the status of the girl child was taken keeping in account the declining sex-ratio in the state. According to the 2011 census, the state has a sex-ratio of 908 females per 1000 males.

District and state-level committees have been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring smooth and effective implementation of the scheme. According to government sources, the progress of the scheme will be monitored at least once in three months through formal meetings.

“Girls outnumbered boys by a huge margin in, the board examinations and also dominated in the merit list, but the count of the girl child is going down in the state”, the state chief minister Yogi Adityanath said while speaking at the launch of the scheme.

Uttar Pradesh now joins Haryana  and Rajasthan which are the other two states to  have taken some stringent measures to keep cases of female foeticide in check.

Such initiatives by the state governments offer us hope that the gender imbalance in the country can be a thing of the past soon.
