Reports suggest she was killed by a man over financial reasons. The two got to know each other digitally, according to Today, and he was allegedly a big fan of the influencer. Over a social media livestream, he reportedly sent her gifts worth 1,00,000 Chinese yuan (around 11,58,280 in Indian rupees).
The influencer and the fan are reported to have met earlier this month. However, there are suggestions their friendship did not work out and the man allegedly demanded she return the amount of gift money he spent on her. He reportedly ended her life when she turned down his demands.
The accused was arrested by Chinese authorities following the incident, as per reports.
The security guard influencer was aged 33. According to media site 8 Days, besides her influencer profile, she was actually employed as a security guard at a driving school. Yubei, as in her social media title, is the name of a district in the urban centre of Chongqing in southwestern China.
The late influencer was married and had two children. When speaking to reporters, her husband claimed he was away on a business trip when she and the man who allegedly killed her met up in person. He said he was unaware of what was happening.
The security guard influencer's death is not the first in recent times to shock the Douyin fan community in China. Last month, the death of influencer Luo Xiao Mao Mao Zi sent shockwaves across social media. As per reports, the 25-year-old was battling depression for some months before her death. She came on livestream in October where she drank pesticide, with fans egging her on to consume the poison. She was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
