On Tuesday night, CCTV cameras caught a man flashing and attacking a woman in a Bengaluru lane. The incident took place in Bengaluru’s JC Nagar. In the footage, a woman, who was wearing a scarf across a face, can be seen walking down the road near her home in the area of DJ Halli when suddenly a man shows up and flashes her.
The accused has been identified as a 20-year-old man named Tata Datt. He can be seen walking towards the woman and then stopping in front of her in the CCTV footage. Seeing this the woman stops too as he proceeds to pull down his pants. During this encounter, he blocks her path but the woman then takes out her slipper and threatens to hit him.
“The woman filed the complaint yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon. We procured the CCTV footage from one of the houses where the incident occurred. We were able to track the accused within one hour,” the JC Nagar Police said, as reported by The News Minute.
Police said that the incident occurred at around 5.05 am on Tuesday. Hearing the 40-year-old survivor scream, her neighbours opened their doors and windows following which the accused allegedly ran away.
Accused is a habitual offender
According to the police, the accused is a serial offender and commonly goes by the name Chotu. The police officer revealed that several robbery cases have been registered against him and that he was named in the list of “habitual offenders”. He was arrested based on the evidence.
“We have six videos of him running back home from different locations starting from the scene of the crime. He was picked up within an hour’s time and he confessed to the crime after questioning,” the police said.
The accused has been booked under section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 354A (physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures) of the Indian Penal Code.
Three years back a similar incident was reported in Bengaluru when on New Year’s Eve two men on a scooter sexually assaulted a girl on a secluded road. This incident was caught on camera too. Subsequently, the perpetrators were arrested after widespread media coverage.
