Dr K Omanakutty: Dr K Omanakutty, Carnatic vocalist and academician, has been selected for the Swathi Sangeetha Puraskaram of the year 2020. It is the Kerala state's highest honour given to musicians.
The Cultural Affair Minister of Kerala A K Balan also announced the winner of the SL Puram Sadanandan Drama Award 2020. It is being given to playwright Ibrahim Vengara. Dr K Omanakutty will receive a certificate, citation and a 20 lakh worth purse as the Swathi Sangeetha Award.
The jury which selected Omanakutty comprised of academicians and scholars of the music industry. They are R Harikrishnan, Parassala Ravi, N Mini and Rani George. They said that the award is in recognition of Omanakutty's work with Swathi kritis and her approach to include the young generation in music.
Who Is Dr K Omanakutty?
Omanakutty is a known performer and a respected academician who is much celebrated in the Carnatic music industry. She received a doctorate for completing research on Kathakali music. Currently, she is the head of the music department at the University of Kerala. She also chairs a private organisation named Sangeetha Bharati and is a senior faculty at the Music Therapy Department of Pankaja Kasthuri Ayurvedic Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram.
