Mark Carney replaced Justin Trudeau as Canada's new Prime Minister. His wife, Diana Fox, is an economist whom he met in college. They have four daughters.

Mark Carney assumed charge as Canada's 24th Prime Minister. The economist and former banker was chosen by the Labour Party to replace Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January. On March 9, Carney defeated former finance minister Chrystia Freeland by gaining 85.9% of the votes by Liberal Party members. More than 150,000 people voted, according to the party’s leaders.

Who Is Mark Carney?

Mark Carney was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, in 1965 and has three siblings — an older brother and sister, Seán and Brenda, and a younger brother, Brian. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University (1988) and a master's degree (1993) and a doctorate (1995) from the University of Oxford.

Besides his distinguished banking career, Carney was appointed the United Nations Special Envoy for climate action and finance. He also worked as one of many informal advisors to Justin Trudeau during the COVID-19 pandemic and was made chair of the Liberal Party's economic growth task force in September 2024.

Mark Carney's Family

Carney is married to Diana Fox Carney, who is also an economist. They met at the University of Oxford and got married in 1994. The Carneys first lived in Toronto before settling in Ottawa’s Rockcliffe Park neighbourhood. From 2013 to 2020, they lived in London when Mark assumed the role of Governor of the Bank of England.

They have four daughters: Sophia, Amelia, Cleo, and Tess. Cleo once hosted a cooking and climate conversation series, with an episode featuring her father. She is a Harvard student and works as a student reporter for a climate and sustainability newsletter. On March 9, she introduced her father as the new Liberal Party leader.
