The man, identified as Sanjay Kumar, had been in a live-in relationship with his 24-year-old girlfriend for some time, and the two were planning to get married. The couple hailed from Vellore, Tamil Nadu and knew each other from class 10.

However, Kumar reportedly derived "pleasure" from reading comments posted below the uploaded pictures of his girlfriend.

The woman along with Kumar earlier complained regarding her morphed private pictures on social media platforms. Based on that complaint police filed a case under IPC Section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing property of others) and other relevant sections of the IT Act, as per a senior police officer reported by Press Trust of India.

Based on the complaint by the couple, police began investigating the matter and the cybercrime team approached the concerned social media platforms to take down the photos. The cyber unit also managed to seek details of the account holder through whose handle the morphed photos were uploaded. It then came to light that it was Kumar who had posted the photos.
