Mamata bermuda shorts remark: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Bengal president Dilip Ghosh is facing heat from Trinamool Congress (TMC) for "derogatory" comments he made against Mamata Banerjee with regard to her leg injury. Addressing a meeting in the Purulia district of poll-bound West Bengal, Ghosh took a potshot at the TMC supremo saying her leg injury would be better visible to the public if she wore shorts instead of a saree.

Banerjee had faced an alleged attack in Nandigram on March 10, which left her with injuries on her limbs for which she sought treatment at a Kolkata hospital. The TMC chief has since been campaigning in a wheelchair. More on that here.

Mamata Bermuda Shorts Remark Condemned By TMC Leaders

The TMC has expressly criticised Ghosh for his statements, calling them "vulgar" and "derogatory," adding that it is proof of BJP leaders not respecting women. "The use of such derogatory language about a female Chief Minister proves that @BJP4Bengal Leaders do not respect women. Mothers and sisters of Bengal... @MamataOfficial May 2 will give a worthy answer to this insult," TMC stated.

TMC leader Mahua Moitra, referring to Ghosh's remarks, said, "And these perverted depraved monkeys think they are going to win Bengal?"

There is high focus on Banerjee's election strategy, in which she has invoked the female power of Bengal on multiple occasions - most prominently with her party slogan 'Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chaye' (Bengal wants its own daughter) - with experts estimating how strongly she will attract the female vote bank in the state. Read TMC election manifesto highlights.

The BJP meanwhile has launched a frontal attack on Banerjee for the state of women's safety in Bengal. In its manifesto, the saffron party has promised job reservations, free education and better safety for women.
