Women thrashing girl viral video: Three women in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh are facing police action after a video of them assaulting a young girl went viral on social media, reports said Tuesday. They were locals, who allegedly beat up the girl for speaking to a man over the phone, police investigating the case said.
The incident occurred in Manikpur village last week, a probe found, according to news agency PTI. Visuals of the assault that circulated online show the three women - identified as Riya, Tuntun and Punnu - kicking the girl around on the ground and pulling her by the hair. First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered against the three.
The girl was reportedly summoned by locals after they found she was talking to a man, police said. The girl, however, has refuted claims of engaging with a man and said she was thrashed because she stole a mobile phone.

The case from Ballia isn't an isolated one in the context of locals, villagers and family members policing young girls for mixing with the opposite gender.
Earlier this year in July, another disturbing video went viral of two sisters from a tribal family being assaulted by adult men reportedly for speaking with their male cousins. The incident only came to light after visuals of the beating surfaced, prompting netizens at the time to question the number of such assaults that went unnoticed since they were unrecorded on camera.
As per another report by ANI last year, a minor girl in Madhya Pradesh was beaten by family and her hair was chopped off for allegedly speaking with a boy. The year before last, a teen girl in Pune was reportedly beaten to death by her mother's partner for talking to a boy.
