Colombian newspaper El Universal reported that Nobel-Prize winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez had a secret daughter with a Mexican writer with whom he had an affair in the early 1990s. The family of Marquez reportedly kept his daughter away from the media in order to respect the privacy of the author’s personal life. His daughter is in her 30s now working as a documentary producer in Mexico City.
Colombian author Garcia Marquez had a secret daughter with Mexican writer and journalist Susana Cato with whom he had an extramarital affair in the early 1990s. The two had worked together over a few projects including two movie scripts and she had also interviewed him in 1996 for a magazine. They named their daughter as Indira.
The secret was revealed by Colombian newspaper El Universal on Sunday after two relatives of the author confirmed to the Associated Press about the existence of author's illegitimate daughter.
The late Colombian author was a Nobel-Prize winner and his notable works include novels like One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera. Garcia Marquez was married to Mercedes Barcha for more than fifty years. They had two boys named Rodrigo and Gonzalo. The couple resided in Mexico City where the author died in 2014.

Marquez’s illegitimate daughter Indira took up her mother’s surname and is in her 30s now. She is working as a documentary producer in Mexico City. Canto has won several awards for her 2014 documentary on migrants of Mexico City.
Shani Garcia Marquez, one of the nieces of the author, said that Canto leads an artistic life just like the rest of the family. “It makes us very happy that she has shined on her own," she said. Shani also said that the family did not want to disclose Indira’s identity to the media out of respect for Mercedes Barcha and they were neither authorised to reveal her as the author’s daughter.
Gabriel Eligio Torres Garcia, a nephew of Marquez, also said that that he has been in touch with her on social media but hasn’t met her in real life.
