Ankita Raina wins maiden ITF Singles Title

Ankita Raina, the 21-year-old Tennis player from Ahmedabad won her maiden ITF singles title today. Playing against British teenager Katy Dunne, Raina earned a 6—2 6—2 victory at the Deccan Gymkhana in Pune. She is also the first woman in the country to win the title in 14 years. She broke her rival's serve five times in two sets while dropping her own only once in the title clash.

 

According to the Hindu Business Line she said, “I am happy to win in Pune and become the first Indian to win after 14 years here. It just proves that Indian players can do it.”

She added, “I’m happy to end the year on a happy note. Finally it’s the end of the year… This year my aim was to reach 200 and hopefully I will break into 260 (following the title triumph). I want to improve my rankings and play more WTA events next year.”

 

The only other woman to win the title from India was Radhika Tulpule, the 2001 national champion in the inaugural year. Zee News reports: Ankita, earned 50 WTA points the winner's prize money, an amount of USD 3,919 (INR 2.45 lakh approx). Dunne, on the other hand received USD 2,091 and 30 points for finishing runner-up in singles.
