Ananya Bangar, the daughter of former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar, is making headlines after speaking openly about her gender transition and the challenges she faced, especially within the cricketing community. Born Aryan Bangar, Ananya shared her emotional journey of moving from India to the UK for her gender transition and the hurdles she faced upon her return to India for hormone replacement therapy.
In a recent interview with Lallantop, Ananya candidly discussed the difficulties and harassment she experienced, including some painful incidents within the cricketing world. She revealed, “There has been support, and there has been some harassment as well... There have been a few cricketers who randomly sent me nude pictures of them.”
Ananya went on to explain how toxic masculinity in the cricketing community was a recurring theme during her journey. “I played with some well-known cricketers now, like Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz Khan, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. I had to maintain secrecy about myself because Dad is a well-known figure. The cricket world is filled with insecurity and toxic masculinity,” she said.
The harassment did not stop there, with Ananya recalling more disturbing encounters. She shared a particularly upsetting memory, “The person used to give gaalis in front of everybody. The same person then used to come and sit beside me and ask for my photos. There was another instance; when I was in India, I told a puraane (veteran) cricketer about my situation. He told me, Let's go in the car; I want to sleep with you.”
Despite these troubling experiences, Ananya spoke about her journey of self-discovery. “For me, it was when I was eight or nine years old; I used to pick clothes from my mom's cupboard and wear them. Then, I used to look into the mirror and say, 'I am a girl. I want to be a girl,'” she revealed.
