Anado Kabika Wore A Gown Made Of Condoms To Miss Universe
The Democratic Republic of Congo's national director's daring ensemble worn during the coronation night sparked conversations about breaking the stigma surrounding safe sex. Kabika’s bold fashion choice carried a deeper message—one of advocacy and education.
In an interview, Anado Kabika shared the vision behind her dress,
"I have a cause, to support and for everyone to wear condoms, people nowadays don't wear condoms anymore. We need to wear condoms, we need to protect ourselves."
Why Is Practicing Safe Sex Essential?
Safe sex practices are essential for preventing both unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of STDs. While some bacterial infections like gonorrhoea, syphilis, and genital warts are treatable, others, such as HIV/AIDS and genital herpes, are lifelong conditions with no cure.
The age group most vulnerable to STDs is 15–24 years. Increased awareness and proper protective measures can significantly reduce the spread of these infections and safeguard public health.
When Monkeypox Caused Havoc in DR Congo
In 2023, the DR Congo faced a severe monkeypox outbreak, reporting 12,569 cases and 581 deaths between January and November. The monkeypox virus, primarily spread through bodily fluids or sexual contact, causes symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes. While most people recover without severe complications, the virus can be fatal in some cases.
Additionally, nearly 1.2% of the population aged 15–49 in the DR Congo is living with HIV, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive sexual health education and practices.
Anado Kabika's innovative gown, made from both used and new condoms, showcases her fearless approach to fashion and activism. Her choice is not just a reflection of her creativity but a testament to her unwavering commitment to spreading awareness about safe sex and breaking societal taboos.
