Teachers are often seen going that extra mile to motivate their students to perform better. A Selvakumari, a teacher at Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Government Higher Secondary School in Ambattur, Chennai used a portion of her savings to take two of her students to Coimbatore by air.

Two of her students H Yamuna and P Saranya scored full marks in social science in Class X board exams. Both the meritorious girls belong to economically backward families and had never boarded a plane before.

The plane ride was a reward for their hard work that they had been putting all those months.

Saranya’s father works as a daily-wage labourer. He was against the idea of sending his daughter on the flight alone. He asked her daughter to the get the reward in cash. The girl managed to convince her father but her grandmother’s demise put her plans on hold.

But luck favoured her and she went to Coimbatore on September 21.

Yamuna, the daughter of a retired defence personnel, said, “The take-off was the most exciting part of the trip.” The girls visited a few temples in Coimbatore before returning the same day. “We may travel by flight a lot in the future, but the first trip would always be special to us and the credit goes to Selvakumari ma’am,” Yamuna added.

Selvakumari wants to reward those who scored 99. She has planned to take the six students to Delhi to witness parliamentary proceedings first hand.

“Selvakumari is our go-to person when it comes to organising events. Besides managing to produce 100% results for the sixth consecutive year, she was keen on motivating students to participate in extra-curricular activities,” the school’s assistant headmaster told The TOI .

Teachers like Selvakumari are an asset to the society. It is because of the constant encouragement and support of such teachers that students do well in their studies and in life.
