The star also took to her Instagram and while sharing artwork of the Egyptian queen she wrote, “ As you might have heard I teamed up with Patty Jenkins and Laeta Kalogridis to bring the story of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, to the big screen in a way she’s never been seen before. To tell her story for the first time through women's eyes, both behind and in front of the camera. And we are especially thrilled to be announcing this on International Day of the Girl!”

She added, “We hope women and girls all around the world, who aspire to tell stories will never give up on their dreams and will make their voices heard, by and for other women.”

After the announcement the star drew a lot of criticism as well, a lot of people criticised her casting by saying that a Greek actress should play the role of Cleopatra and not an Israeli actress.

One of the comments wrote, “ A Greek actress should portray Cleopatra. It’s not part of your culture.”

Many netizens also objected saying that women of colour should get the role. Morgan Jerkins, an American author tweeted, " I'm sure Gal Gadot is going to a wonderful job as Cleopatra. However, for me personally, I would love a Cleopatra who's darker than a brown paper bag, because that seems a bit more historically accurate."

The rights to the project have been won by Paramount Pictures in an auction, Warner Bros, Netflix, and Apple, were part of the auction too as reported by Deadline. The film will be written by Laeta Kalogridis, known for writing Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and Alita: Battle Angel. The biographical drama will be produced by Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven, Jenkins, Gadot, and her Pilot Wave Motion Pictures partner Jaron Varsano
