About Cyclone Yaas: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning ahead of the landfall of Cyclone Yaas, brewing in the Bay of Bengal around May 23. The super Cyclone, which got its name from Oman, comes after the cyclone Tauktae wrecked havoc upon Maharashtra, Gujrat, and other states.

Initially, Sunita Devi, in charge-cyclones at the IMD, stated that the temperature of the sea is above the normal range over the Bay of Bengal, and Arabian sea. “In our outlook on cyclogenesis also we have indicated that the low-pressure system can intensify. As soon as it comes in our forecast skill range we will mention it in our forecasts,” she told a leading daily.

Here are 10 things to know about Cyclone Yaas:

-The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the super cyclone is  likely to intensify into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ by 31 May at night and ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ in the next 24 hours.

-Jharkhand has been placed under red alert category and IMD predicts extreme rainfall in southern and central parts of the state on Wednesday and Thursday.

— ANI (@ANI) May 25, 2021 IMD said that a severe cyclonic storm is to cross north Odisha-West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island on May 26 during noon.

-The vaccination drive in all centres under Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been rescheduled to May 29.

-The cyclone which is predicted to hit Bhitarkania National Park in Kendrapara district close to Dhamra port in Odisha, local people pin their hopes on the rich mangrove forest cover along the wetland sites to turn into a saviour for them.

-According to the airport administration, flight operations at Kolkata airport will be suspended from 8.30 am till 7.45 pm of May 26, keeping in view the IMD warnings.

- Mamata Banerjee has stated that the state is targeting to evacuate at least 10 lakh people in a bid to avoid any loss of life. Whereas, in Odisha, as per Special Relief Commissioner PK Jena, the evacuation process has already begun which will be completed by Tuesday afternoon.

-West Bengal Chief Minister said that 54,000 officers and relief workers, 2 lakh police and Home Guard personnel, along with National Disaster NDRF teams, will be deployed to tackle the fallout of the storm.

-Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have initiated intra-circle roaming and deployed additional cells on wheels in West Bengal and Odisha to mitigate the impact of cyclone Yaas.

-An Indian Geographic Information System Software & Solutions provider, Esri India, has developed a map to follow Cyclone Yaas Live Path. The map provides updates on the cyclone and relevant elements using inputs from IMD. The users can track the super cyclone live using a browser and going to the dedicated Cyclone Yaas Live Path page.
