East Delhi Councillor Geeta Rawat Arrested By CBI For Demanding Bribe: Report

AAP leader Geeta Rawat was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on the charges of demanding a bribe on Friday. The councillor of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation was taken for interrogation based on a complaint filed by a person who had accused her of demanding a bribe.

It was alleged that Rawat had demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a person in return for laying the roof of the person's home in an "unhindered" manner. A further investigation into the matter is currently underway.

Reportedly, the bribe to Rawat used to go via a peanut seller, who has also been arrested in connection with the case. As per the CBI, action against Rawat was taken after a person from whom she had asked for money, filed a complaint against her.

CBI first arrested the middleman to whom the person had given Rs 20,000. This middleman, allegedly, had set up the deal with a street vendor outside the councillor's office. The investigating team has suggested that it is through this channel that the money was exchanged, however, CBI is further probing the matter.

When the father of the peanut seller came to know that his son was held and he inquired the reason for the arrest and was notified that the son has been arrested for corruption. Both the accused people are now being interrogated by CBI. According to them, they will be produced before a special CBI court.

Who is Geeta Rawat?

Geeta Rawat is the winner of the Delhi MCD election for the year 2017. She won from Vinod Nagar in East Delhi under the banner of the Aam Aadmi Party. The 38-year-old lists herself as self-employed. Rawat has done her MA from DAV PG College Hemwati Nadan Bahuguna Garhwal University Srinagar Garhwal, Uttaranchal in 2002.

Prior to this Rawat hasn't been in news for any illegal activities and has no previous criminal record.
