A marathon exclusively for women to promote awareness towards breast cancer was organised on Monday in Guwahati. ‘Pinkathon – Empowering Indian Woman’ is a concept etched out by well known marathoner, fitness enthusiast, actor and model, Milind Soman. He has made it his aim to encourage more women all over India to participate in marathons and to spread awareness about breast cancer.
In the Guwahati chapter of this marathon, around 5000 women took part from a diverse age group and backgrounds. Young, adult and old all were to be seen participating in the 3 km, 5 km, 10 km all-woman marathon.
It also had a few visually-impaired, deaf and cancer survivors running the marathon.

“This is more than a marathon. It is the seed for change and the beginning of a movement carried forward by a growing community of empowered women across India who share a belief that a healthy family, a healthy nation and a healthy world begins with empowered women,” said Soman about the marathon to PTI.
Milind Soman has been trying to encourage and empower women through fitness since quite some time now. In July, he announced the idea of a unique running saree for women who prefer wearing this traditional outfit, to get more women from different backgrounds to participate in marathons. He has started working on the concept and will be launching the saree anytime now as he had already gotten in touch with a Delhi designer.

Further, Soman is super supportive of the women empowerment cause. Recently, when Sakshi Malik and P V Sindhu won at the Rio Olympics, he had this to say, “Women are told they are second-class citizens, but they saved our izzat in Rio Olympics.”
We agree with Milind on that one!
