After coming across a post on social media to donate fresh hair to a cancer patient, Anusuya Ghosh's parents responded that they were planning to shave their daughter’s head. In Tirupura, it’s common practice to shave children’s heads with the belief that it aids in better hair growth.

Anusuya’s mother, Sima Chakma, a school teacher, came across a social media post by a Bengaluru-based NGO stating that a 50-year-old woman named Sanghamitra Shaligram of Maharashtra was currently undergoing cancer treatment at the Nagpur healthcare centre and was in need of a hair transplant.

Realising the difference that it would make, Anusuya’s family immediately decided to make the donation. A team, along with the girl’s mother, Chakma, shaved Anusuya’s long hair and sent the hair to Sanghamitra on Saturday.

Chama said that this gesture would encourage others to stand by those who are battling cancer and other diseases. She further pointed out that humanity had survived for centuries through such small acts. She also added that if they had not known the importance of the hair, they would have definitely shaved Anusuya’s head and dumped the hair as per common practice.

In 2022, a Bengaluru-based couple’s one-year-old daughter in the United States became the youngest hair donor for young cancer survivors by donating 10 inches of her hair to make wigs for young cancer patients.

The child, Kiara Praveen, was born in October 2020 in Karnataka and is now living in Atlanta, Georgia. Her parents donated her hair to make free wigs with natural hair for cancer patients in February 2022, when she was 1 year and 3 months old. The child was awarded the Asia Book of Records certificate for her contribution through an NGO named Freewigs4kids in Atlanta, Georgia.

The child is featured in four books of records, such as the Kalam Book of Records, the India Book of Records, the Asia Book of Records, and the World Book of Records.
