After this year’s Asian Games at Incheon, the world has taken notice of Indian women in sports. What most people don’t know is that many of these sportswomen have set new records in their careers. Here is a list of 5 such women.

 

MC MARY KOM

Mary Kom is the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships. She became the first Indian woman boxer to get a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 at Incheon, South Korea and has been ranked as No. 4 AIBA World Women's Ranking Flyweight category.

 

SAINA NEHWAL

Indian badminton player, Saina Nehwal, is the first Indian to win a medal in Badminton at the Olympics. She attained a career best ranking of 2 in December 2010 by Badminton World Federation. Nehwal also became the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships.

JWALA GUTTA

Jwala Gutta is an International Badminton player who has won the National Badminton Championships fourteen times till 2013. Along with Ashwini Ponnappa, she has consistently been ranked among the top 20 in the world. In 2011, Gutta was awarded the Arjuna award by the Indian Government.

SHARMILA NICOLLET

Sharmila Nicollet started playing Golf at the age of 11 and is the youngest Indian woman player to win the All-India Ladies Amateur Championship in 2007–2008, along with seven Open Amateur Tournaments. She is the youngest Indian golfer to qualify for Ladies European Tour and has 11 wins on the Women's Golf Association of India.

 

DIPIKA PALLIKAL

Squash player Dipika Pallikal is the first Indian woman to break into the top 10 in the WSA rankings.  At the 20th Commonwealth Games held this year, Dipika, along with Joshna Chinappa won a gold medal in the squash women's doubles event. She started her career when she was in the sixth grade when she played her first international tournament in London.
