Success stories mark 2nd anniversary of SHE teams

On October 24, 2014, SHE team was launched in Hyderabad with an aim to make the city safe for women. As the force celebrated its 2nd anniversary on Monday, the results are a lot more rewarding than expected. It claimed to have reduced crime against women by around 20% in the city.

According to statistics from the city police, in the past two years, the police booked 800 offenders, including 222 juveniles, under cases of women and girls’ harassment.

SHE Team’s work at a glance:

  • The total number of cases registered so far is 1,897, of which 40 cases were under the Nirbhaya Act, 33 cases under the IPC and IT Act and one case under the POCSO Act at various police stations in Hyderabad.
  • Police stated that from 1,521 cases of harassment of women reported last year, the number reduced to 1,296 cases this year.
  • SHE Team received 1,217 complaints through Dial 100 and 322 via Facebook and hundreds through WhatsApp, hawkeye and phone calls.

“41 offenders were imprisoned, 242 were fined, 392 were counselled and PD Act was invoked against two offenders. After the launch of SHE teams, teasing and harassment cases have reduced by 20% in the city,” Hyderabad additional CP Swati Lakra told media personnel at her office in Basheerbagh on Monday, TOI reported.

Work is on to spread awareness among girls. Soon the topic would be introduced in the Telangana Intermediate board’s second year civics syllabus.

SHE teams also reported that of the offenders, 23% were youngsters and just over 1% aged above 40 years.
