10 Years Of Nirbhaya Case, DCW Stand

Swati Maliwal called for the suspension of sessions in both houses of the Parliament in the tweet. She said, "nothing has changed even after a decade. Nirbhaya case completed 10 years today. The sad part is that yet nothing has changed. We have also urged the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha speakers to suspend the sessions to discuss women’s safety."

Maliwal also attached copies of the letters that she sent to Rajya Sabha Speaker and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Prakash Birla.

A few of the lines from the letter read, "Everyday crimes against women and children are being reported in the national capital.” The letter also mentioned cases of violence against an eight-month-old baby and a 90-year-old woman. The letter also highlighted the recent acid attack on a 17-year-old girl in Delhi's Dwarka district on 14 December. The girl suffered an 8% burn and was admitted to a hospital.

The letter further read, “The problems of increasing crime against women and girls have reached an epidemic proportion and the governments are failing to take concrete steps to counter it. Governments have failed to create deterrence in the minds of people."

On the night of 16 December 2012, a physiotherapy student was gang-raped in the moving bus across the national capital when she was travelling with her friend. Her friend was thrown out of the bus. She was not only raped but brutally assaulted by using an iron rod. She succumbed to the gruesome incident days later and the incident came to be known as the “Nirbhaya” case. Later, the incident triggered massive protests in India.
