Reuters appoints new editor-in-chief: Reuters has appointed Alessandra Galloni, one of its highest-ranking editors, as the agency's new editor-in-chief, effective from April 19. The company announced on Twitter on Monday that she became the first woman to lead the globe-spanning newsroom in its 170-year history. She will succeed Stephen J. Adler, who announced his retirement this year after leading the newsroom for a decade.

Here are things to know about 47-year-old Galloni:

1. A native of Rome, Galloni can speak four languages. She has wide experience in covering business and political news at Reuters.

2. Prior to getting promoted this month, Galloni has been working as a global managing editor with Reuters since 2015. She has been working in the company’s London office.

3. She already had a top position at the agency, touted to be one of the world’s biggest news organisations, with 2,500 journalists in 200 locations. “For 170 years, Reuters has set the standard for independent, trusted and global reporting,” she said in a statement. “It is an honor to lead a world-class newsroom full of talented, dedicated and inspiring journalists.”

4. Galloni is expected to, in her new role, find solutions to critical tasks such as maintaining a good relationship with the biggest customers and boosting the Reuters digital and events businesses.

5. Galloni started her career at Reuters as an Italian-language news reporter. After that, she worked at the Wall Street Journal for 13 years.

6. She rejoined Reuters as the editor of its Southern Europe bureau in 2013.

7. She is currently the global managing editor, one of Adler's top lieutenants. Adler said in a tweet that he is "thrilled to be passing the baton to a brilliant editor and a great colleague."

8. Galloni is the recipient of the 2020 Minard Editor Award from the Gerald Loeb Foundation, as well as the winner of an Overseas Press Club Award and a UK Business Journalist of the Year Award.

9. Michael Friedenberg, the president of Reuters, said in a statement that Galloni had “a compelling vision for the future of news.”

10. Galloni’s appointment comes after an "extensive global search" and she will sit on Reuters' executive committee. The eight-year veteran of Reuters will continue to work from London. will take over next Monday.
