Notably, the man—the father of a two-year-old son—met the transwoman at Ambadola in the Rayagada area last year when she was begging on the streets. It was love at first sight for the man. He asked for the transwoman's phone number and continued to talk with her regularly.

The man's wife became suspicious about her husband's talks with the transwoman a month ago. As soon as his wife confronted him, he confessed to having an affair with the transwoman and explained seriousness about the affair. His wife agreed to welcome the transgender woman into their family.

The Odisha man married the transwoman at a small ceremony in a temple in Narla in front of a family and few members of the transgender community.

The second marriage, whether it be to a woman or to a transgender person, is not permitted under Indian law in a Hindu family, the senior advocate Srinivas Mohanty of the Orissa High Court reportedly said. According to Indian law, if a second marriage occurs, it is null and void and subject to punishment, Mohanty added.

The couple's wedding was organised by Kamini, president of the local transgender association, who added, "After the wedding, we also went to the police station to inform them about the marriage...the police said they have little to do in the matter."

"If a complaint is filed on any such incident (transgender marriage) by an aggrieved party, then only we will proceed as per law," Narla police station inspector in charge informed the media.

The newly-wed couple, who wished to remain anonymous, did, however, express how pleased they are with their marriage. The man remarked, "Even my wife is happy, and we are not concerned about the law."
