The deceased had passed away on April 5, a day after the alleged crime, due to excessive bleeding. She was allegedly gangraped at the birthday party of a Trinamool Congress leader's son. Her body was reportedly cremated in a hurry after her death.

In connection with the case, the CBI members went to the place for further investigations. To access entry to the property where the crime allegedly took place, they broke the lock of the wooden gate to the property. The main accused in the case, 21-year-old Brajgopal Gayali, used to visit the property often and it was her that he had invited the deceased girl as well.

The CBI was accompanied by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) team and together they collected the "samples and circumstantial evidence." Other evidence that the West Bengal Police had collected like the stained bed-sheet, the deceased person's clothes and her phone were handed over to the CBI, who had taken over the case following the Calcutta High Court order.

The main accused is the son of a local gram panchayat member and an affiliated politician from TMC. Along with Samar, the police arrested Prabhakar Poddar. His arrest was made on the basis of Brajgopal's statement.

The case has led to a widespread protest against the ruling government, especially after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made an insensitive and irksome comment on the case. She said, "Was it rape? Or did she get pregnant after an affair? Have they inquired," she also added that the girl passed away on April 5 and the police only came to know about this on April 10. She also raised the question of the family and why they chose to cremate bodies in a hurry.

The parents of the deceased girl said that they cremated her body because of the pressure from Samar. Banerjee's statements had been criticised by people widely including the National Commission for Women. The chairperson of NCW Rekha Sharma said, "Her statement over the incident is very unfortunate. Being a woman, she should understand the pain of another woman. She pointed fingers at the victim, it was wrong."
