Mayur Shelkhe, the railway pointsman in Mumbai whose video of saving a young boy's life from a speeding train went viral earlier this week, was rewarded by the centre for his bravery. Shelkhe, however, doesn't want to keep the Rs 50,000 worth reward all for himself and has reportedly decided to donate half to the boy he saved.
"I'll give half of the amount, given to me as token of appreciation, for that child's welfare & education. I came to know that his family isn't financially strong," ANI quoted him saying Thursday.
The incident, where Shelkhe courageously raced against time to save a child who fell on the tracks at Vangani railway station, occurred April 17. A video of the same caught on surveillance footage by the Central Railways went viral on social media Monday. More here.
Railway Employee Mayur Shelkhe Donates His Reward For Child's Education
Soon as Shelkhe began earning praise online for his bravado, many netizens urged authorities to reward him for his selfless act. The railway employee was felicitated and lauded by his colleagues, and honoured by the Railway Ministry with Rs 50,000.
Shelkhe, who revealed that the mother of the child who lost his balance is visually impaired, said she was very grateful to him. "The woman (with the child) was visually impaired. She could do nothing. I ran towards the child but also thought that I might be in danger too. Still, I thought I should save him. The woman was very emotional & thanked me a lot," he was quoted saying.
