Speaking with Asian News International (ANI), Dr Prachi Rathod recounted the social stigma and discrimination she had to face since childhood.

Dr Rathod said, “I feel great, this will be the first time a transgender will work for a government hospital.” She added that it “feels great to treat patients without any gender difference, as their healthcare facilitator”.

The doctor added, “I am in front of you all and serving the community now because of my self-confidence… I will definitely be there for the community for all the support they need”.

Dr Ruth John Paul also shared her experience with discrimination. She said, ”The dream of becoming a doctor motivated me to work harder. I faced many stigmas from society, friends, and relatives. However, I completed my studies”.

Dr Paul also thanked the superintendent of the hospital and the staff for the opportunity. She also thanked her brother for her support.

Dr Paul said, “Many people from my community encouraged me.” She added that she previously worked in a non-government organisation (NGO) clinic for transgender people as a part-time doctor.
