The Making of ‘Vekhan Nu’: Bringing Back The Old World Charm

Tulsi Kumar describes Vekhan Nu as a song that beautifully blends traditional Punjabi folk with a fresh, contemporary melody. Drawing inspiration from the popular Punjabi folk phrase Maya Tere Vekhan Nu, the song retains an old-world charm while also being a fun and danceable tune, making it perfect for weddings and celebrations.

She says, “Maya Tere Vekhan Nu is a very very popular Punjabi folk. So, we have kind of used that bit also but with a completely different melody. It’s a beautiful love song.”

The song’s visual aesthetic plays a crucial role in understanding its essence. Directed by Taani Tanvir, the music video was shot in Georgia. The country’s historic architecture helped create a nostalgic yet timeless feel. The music video exudes a classic charm that complements the song’s emotional depth.

Adding to the excitement, Tulsi stars in the video alongside Taha Shah, making the project even more special for her. She expresses enthusiasm for how the song has turned out and hopes that audiences will love it!

Venturing into Punjabi Music

For Tulsi, Vekhan Nu holds a special place in her musical journey as it marks her first fully Punjabi song. She acknowledges the challenge of perfecting the diction and nuances of the language, emphasising the lyrical beauty of Punjabi. Kumar said, “I think Punjabi is a language jaha bohot pyaari baatein kahi jaati hai!”

She recalls how her team played an integral role in guiding her through the process, ensuring authenticity in her pronunciation and delivery. Tulsi describes Punjabi as a deeply expressive and heartwarming language, making the song even more special for her.

Motherhood and Music: Finding Balance and Growth

Reflecting on motherhood, Tulsi shares how becoming a mother has profoundly shaped her perspective on life and music. Balancing her professional and personal life has been a learning experience, helping her grow as both an artist and an individual.

Motherhood, she says, has strengthened her patience and adaptability. While balancing work and family life can be challenging, she embraces it wholeheartedly, viewing it as a fulfilling journey rather than a struggle. Even when things don’t go as planned, she approaches challenges with calmness and resilience, something she credits to her role as a mother.

Kumar says, “...when you say motherhood — it’s really got a lot of patience in me! I was a patient girl anyways, but after being a mom I know how it is to be, I have a 7-year-old, so to deal with him & getting the right balance between my work life and my life at home, my personal life. This is always a struggle for women honestly..”

Music as a Healing Force: Mental Well-Being Through Sound

Discussing the impact of music on mental health, Tulsi highlights how soulful melodies have the power to heal and soothe. She recalls receiving an email from a listener who found solace in her lounge mix of Sanam Re during a period of illness.

For Tulsi, music isn’t just about vocals—instrumental sounds and nature’s melodies also play a role in mental relaxation. From the soothing strums of the sitar to the gentle sound of water, she finds peace in a variety of sounds that help her unwind and reconnect with herself.

Tulsi Kumar acknowledges the remarkable growth of independent music, particularly in recent years. While she began her career primarily with Bollywood songs, she has always had a deep connection to independent music. She is thrilled to see how the industry has evolved, offering more platforms and opportunities to independent artists.

Unlike the past, where mainstream film music dominated the industry, independent artists today receive widespread support. With more streaming platforms, social media, and digital avenues, artists have gained visibility and recognition.

She says, “I think there are abundant opportunities. And there are abundant listeners…”

She believes independent music is the future, as seen in the increasing number of sold-out concerts by non-film artists. With more women making waves in this space, Tulsi encourages continued support and amplification of their voices.

As she remains dedicated to her passion of making soulful art, Tulsi Kumar’s journey is as an inspiration for many—both within and beyond the music industry.
