There is something so delightful about stepping into a bookstore—surrounded by the comforting scent of paper, unbound thoughts and creativity, and the belongingness among fellow book lovers. Bookstores inspire curiosity and foster conversations, making them a haven for readers of all kinds. In an interview with SheThePeople, Nidhi Gupta, Director of Crossword Bookstores, spoke about how contemporary readers are impacting the Indian literary landscape and society. She also shared her leadership journey and how the ever-evolving Indian reader community has inspired her.
In Conversation With Nidhi Gupta
Having grown up an avid book lover, Nidhi Gupta's foray into the bookstore industry came as no surprise. "I’ve always been an avid reader—the kind of child who would hide under the table to finish a book before dinner," she recounted. "Books have been my escape and have shaped my thoughts and imagination."
Gupta studied Business at Carnegie Mellon University in the USA. "While my career could have taken many different paths, my love for books led me here," she shared. "I married into a family of book lovers, and that passion naturally drew me into the world of bookstores."
Over the years, Gupta's relationship with reading has evolved into a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling. "Today, with so many distractions, finding time to read is a lot more effort, but reading is peaceful and stimulating in a way no TV show or movie can replicate. There’s something deeply fulfilling about getting lost in a great book—it stays with you long after you turn the last page," she expressed.
Notes On The Indian Reader
Nidhi Gupta shared her observation of the Indian reader community and its demands for authentic and diverse storytelling. She explained how the digital era has influenced reading and the bookstore industry, increasing access to global literature and creating a demand for convenience and unique book-shopping experiences.
"The modern Indian reader is dedicated, intelligent, and discerning. They read across genres—contemporary fiction, self-care, business, and biographies. What’s also exciting is the rise of regional and translated works. They are also influenced by social media trends, follow reviews and are keen to experiment," Gupta detailed.
With advancing technology, the way people engage with information has shifted drastically. Gupta shared, "Bookstores today compete not only with quick-commerce platforms but also with OTT streaming, podcasts and social media distractions. The challenge is to make bookstores an experience rather than just a place to buy books."
Gupta explained how she, as a leader, is amplifying diverse literary voices in Indian literature: "We believe in providing a fair and inclusive platform where every voice is heard. As unbiased spaces, we champion inclusivity, ensuring equal and democratic representation of diverse perspectives, cultures, and communities."
Gupta's journey as a woman in leadership has inspired her to champion inclusivity. "I’m lucky to work in a space where many women have already carved strong positions. As in any industry, one needs resilience to gain credibility and be taken seriously. Being a leader requires balancing tradition with innovation and business with passion," she shared.
Being part of the vibrant literary ecosystem has been deeply fulfilling for Nidhi Gupta. "For me, the biggest takeaway from the literary community is that books will always matter," she expressed. "No matter how the world changes, there will always be readers who seek knowledge, escape, and connection through stories."
