Who Is Kamal Khera? Canada's New Health Minister Has Roots In India

Kamal Khera has been appointed as the Minister of Health in Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's cabinet. The 36-year-old politician is among the few members of parliament who have retained their posts from former PM Justin Trudeau's administration. Born in Delhi, she is one of the two Indian-origin women elected to the Carney government on March 15. She is a registered nurse, community volunteer, and political activist, according to the prime minister of Canada's website.

In a post on X, Khera wrote, “As a nurse, my top priority is to always be there to support my patients, and that's the same mentality I'll bring every day to the role of Minister of Health. Extremely grateful for the confidence of PM @MarkJCarney. Now, it's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work.”

Who Is Kamal Khera?

Kamalpreet Khera was born on February 4, 1989, in Delhi. Her father, Harminder Singh, who passed away in 2020, served in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), while her mother, Gursharan Kaur, was a teacher. Her elder brother, Mani Singh, is a mortgage specialist at the Bank of Montreal. 

The family moved to Canada when Kamal Khera was in school. She graduated from York University, Toronto, with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She then started working as a registered nurse in the palliative and oncology units at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto.

Upon entering politics, Khera was nominated as the Liberal candidate in Brampton West in December 2014. In the following October, she became the youngest Liberal MP in the House, and the second-youngest overall behind Pierre-Luc Dusseault of the New Democratic Party (NDP).

Khera was re-elected in the 2019 and 2021 elections. She has held numerous distinguished ministerial positions, including parliamentary secretary to the minister of international development, minister of seniors, national revenue minister, and minister of diversity, inclusion, and persons with disabilities.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Khera volunteered at a long-term care facility in her hometown of Brampton and administered vaccines in her community. She is also actively involved in the Canadian South Asian community, celebrating cultural events and promoting their diversity and inclusion.
