Tiny Handbags

I don’t think I related to Kajol on a more fundamental level than when she rejected a Louis Vuitton bag which Karan Johar wanted to gift her. The reason, as revealed on the Season 6 of Koffee with Karan was that the bag didn’t have zips in the front and back, which was a primary criterion for the actress. And as far as spending her own money on such an expensive accessory was concerned, she’d rather put the amount in a fixed deposit.

While growing up, I remember treating my mother’s handbag as an enigma. It had chains and flaps galore, was as heavy as a medium-sized boulder and housed enough amenities to help her get through the day as an insurance officer and be ready for a wedding in the evening in a record-breaking time! From wet wipes and safety pins to her passbook, pocket mirror and a tiny bottle of fennel seeds, it was a never-ending sack of surprises. In fact, it still is.

Designer Simon Porte Jacquemus had models walk down the runway with bags so miniscule that they almost escaped the naked eye.

Having grown up on this blissful ideology of carrying a rather hefty handbag, I was horrified at the tiny bags which saw the light of the day at the Paris Fashion week recently. Inspired by the French countryside, designer Simon Porte Jacquemus had models walk down the runway with bags so miniscule that they almost escaped the naked eye. Apparently these bags can barely fit a pair of Apple Airpods. This takes the pack lightly advice to a whole another level!

If you are wondering about the exorbitant price point, these bags aren’t available for purchase until next season, the brand's current in-season collection of micro bags are priced from $345 to $795. And as if unable to design bags of feasible sizes, Jacquemus also premiered humongous tote bags along with his micro purses.

Apparently these bags can barely fit a pair of Apple Airpods. This takes the pack lightly advice to a whole another level!

At a time when women are fighting to have pockets in their jeggings and dresses and shirts, and coercing brands to make their sizes more expansive, it is disappointing to see fashion brands take inaccessible fashion to whole another level. Unless one is buying this bag for their child’s dollhouse, I don’t see its purpose to be honest. It doesn’t help that celebrities like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner have appeared carrying earlier versions of these micro-bags in the past.

Unable to make sense of such absurdity passing off as fashion, the Twitteratis have made ample memes and compared it to “carrying no emotional baggage”, their existing level of patience and as a “bag to carry all the fucks I give.” Someone even hilariously observed, “This is for cocaine Jacquemus isn’t bold enough to say it but we KNOW it.”

If the brand’s intention was to get people talking, it has certainly achieved the feat. But if fashion’s purpose is to help women express their truest, most authentic selves, and empower them to feel confident and seize the day, we need bags which can at least fit a lipstick and wallet! Even if we are willing to shell out $500 for a designer bag, most real women don’t have a superstar’s entourage to carry the things which their mini-bags won’t accommodate!

So dear Jacquemus, when it comes to a woman’s bag, size does matter!
