Milk During Pregnancy: When you are pregnant, you and the life growing inside you rely on access to certain nutrients. Your body can get these essential nutrients by drinking milk during those crucial months.

There are many conflicting views about dairy consumption during pregnancy, but drinking high-quality milk can provide calcium, vitamins, and other nutrients for both you and your developing baby. For those who are lactose tolerant, here are some reasons why you should drink milk during your pregnancy:

Rich in protein

Protein is a vital nutrient at any stage of life, but it is most essential during pregnancy. A growing fetus requires significant amounts of protein to build healthy new cells, especially in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. 

While there are other sources of protein too, the protein in milk contains all the amino acids that your body requires to function optimally. Milk protein is also easily digestible and absorbable, so your body is able to actually utilise all of the protein you consume.

Fulfils calcium needs

Your body requires calcium to help build the developing baby's bones, teeth, heart, muscles, and nerves. Lack of calcium can lead to your body pulling calcium from your bones to supply the baby with the requisite amount of the nutrient. This enhances your risk of developing osteoporosis later in life.

Calcium supplements can be taken as suggested by your doctor. For those who are not allergic to milk, nutritionists recommend drinking milk daily to meet your calcium requirements.

To meet Vitamin D needs

Along with calcium, your body also needs Vitamin D to absorb the mineral properly. Vitamin D is also essential because it helps you and your baby stay safe from infections by strengthening your immune system. Getting adequate amounts of vitamin D also contributes to a healthy birth weight.

During pregnancy, the recommended daily amount of Vitamin D is 600 IU, but there are very rare foods that contain the vitamin or in that much quantity. So generally, milk is fortified with vitamin D to help you meet your pregnancy needs.
