Here are 7 Things To Know About the film Zola:
Zolais based on the aforementioned 2015 Twitter thread about a Detroit waitress named Zola who becomes friendly with Stefani, her customer. The latter then convinced the waitress to join her for partying over the weekend. However, their weekend trip turns out to be something else.
The tweet became so popular that it inspired an article called “Zola Tells All: The Real Story Behind the Greatest Stripper Saga Ever Tweeted,” written by journalist David Kushner.
Here's how the film's synopsis by A24 read: “Zola (Taylour Paige), a Detroit waitress, strikes up a new friendship with a customer, Stefani (Riley Keough), who seduces her to join a weekend of dancing and partying in Florida. What at first seems like a glamorous trip full of ‘hoeism’ rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving a nameless pimp, an idiot boyfriend, some Tampa gangsters and other unexpected adventures in this wild, see-it-to-believe-it tale.”
The film has been directed by Janicza Bravo, and stars Taylour Paige, Riley Keough, Colman Domingo and Nicholas Braun among others.
It has been produced by Killer Films, and the screenplay has been written by Bravo and Jeremy O’Harris.
The film gained a lot of praise when it was premiered at the Sundance Sundance Film Festival in January 2020.
It was nominated for the Grand Jury Awards pre-screening at the Sundance Festival.
