Sport Is Big In Bollywood In 2022 : What's In Store?

Expect female leads in five upcoming bollywood sport movies in 2022. Sport is one of the strongest bonds that hold people together  This makes it one of the reasons why sports movies are among the very few sets of movies that can attract a large set of audiences. Whether it was Dangal, Chak De, 83 and even Lagaan to an extent, we have seen some fantastic films based on sport in India. 2022 for a change is one year when we will be expecting some fantastic performances, particularly by women in lead roles.

Five Upcoming Bollywood Sports Movies In 2022:

Chakda Xpress-

The movie takes up the issue of the women's cricket team not being given the appropriate attention during the years of its formation, along with the struggles of the world's fastest woman bowler and former Indian captain of the women's cricket team, Jhulan Goswami. The movie shows Anushka Sharma as the main lead. The teaser was released a few days back and the movie is expected to release soon on Netflix. 

While Sharma posted the teaser on her social media platform she added, how she was honoured to have played Goswami in the movie and the due respect to women cricket must be given especially in a cricketing nation like ours. The teaser has already been widely appreciated and Sharma is making her comeback in the movies after her last movie Zero which was released in 2018. 

Maidaan-

The biographical sports film stars Ajay Devgn in the main role as the football coach Syed Abdul Rahim. It is directed by Amit Sharma, known for his movies like Badhaai Ho, Tevar and produced by Zee Studios in collaboration with Bayview Projects. The movie focuses on the golden era of the football period in the country.

Along with Devgn, the movie will feature Priyamani of The Family Man fame along with Aryann Bhowmol, Rudranil Ghosh, and Nitanshi Goel. The movie is expected to make a release in June 2022. Devgn will be essaying the role of Rahim in the movie who was a football legend of yesteryears and had earned the title of "founding father of India football".

Jersey-

The much-awaited movie of Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur, Jersey, has seen a delay in its theatrical release. The sports drama directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri was expected to release on December 31, 2021. However, the date was pushed due to a surge in COVID cases throughout the country and the new dates are yet to be announced by the maker. 

The movie is the remake of a Telugu blockbuster movie by the same name where an ex-cricket person struggles to lead a happy life with his family member after leaving the world of cricket. To fulfil his child's wish of getting a jersey, the man has to face his past and decide if he wants to live a life of loser or take up the challenge. 

Shabaash Mithu-

The biographical sports drama is based on the life story of the current test and ODI captain of the women's cricket team- Mithali Raj. The life story of a right-handed batter will see Taapsee Pannu in the titular role. The movie directed by Srijit Mukherji and produced by Viacom18 Studios is expected to make a release in February 2022. 

The movie was shot at various locations both internationally as well as domestically, including the Lord's playground to bring the best of the matches played by Raj. Pannu constantly posted pictures of her cricket preparations and fitness regime on social media to play the character right. 

Liger-

Liger marks the first movie of Telugu superstar Vijay Deverakonda in Hindi movie. Along with Deverkonda, the audience will be seeing Ananya Pandey in the lead role. The movie is based on the life of a boxer, as he struggles his way from being a chaiwala to a boxer competing in the international forum. Liger will release in different Indian languages like - Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada.

It also shows Ronit Roy's character as the trainer of the boxer, various fight sequences on the streets, and local trains of Mumbai. Mike Tyson will also be seen in the movie. The movie is directed by Puri Jagannadh and produced by actor-producer Charmme Kaur, Karan Johar, and Puri Jagannadh. The movie is expected to release in August 2022.
