Crazy Rich Asians, when it was released worldwide in 2018, debuted with a bang, quickly grossing 240 million dollars. Based on the book by Kevin Kwan and Adele Lim, by the same name, it went on to become a big hit. It also received two Golden Globe Nominations for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Actress for Wu.

Depending on the success of the movie, it wasn’t a secret that Warner Bros would bank the other two books of the Trilogy. While both the books have been said to be in development to hit the big screens over the years, there has been a delay, in any concrete news.

The news of the soon to be filmed movie was revealed when Henry Golding stated in an interview that he can’t wait to get back to Singapore. He said, "I always bug about it and he tells him the same thing every time: They're trying to figure out the writing. I know they're working on it, but hopefully sooner than later." The  2018 romantic comedy, Crazy Rich Asians showcased a stellar cast with Constance Wu and Henry Golding as lead actors with Chiarelli, Lim, Gemma Chan, and Michelle Yeoh in significant roles.

In the aftermath of the success of the movie ">Crazy Rich Asians, two sequels were announced which were originally set to be shot back-to-back in 2020. Producers Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and John Penotti who held the rights to the other two books, never went on to the production of the two sequels, due to jam-packed schedules and other commitments of the lead actors along with the directors.

Reportedly after Adele Lim’s departure from writing the script of the movie, on a pay disparity issue in 2019, when she was offered $110,000 compared to Chiarelli's far more lucrative $800,000 to $1 million deal, she stated "Pete has been nothing but incredibly gracious, but what I make shouldn't be dependent on the generosity of the white-guy writer." the writing never materialised.
