Fashion models Urmimala and Snigdha Baruah are making history at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 as reportedly the first mother-daughter pair to walk to red carpet together. The duo, coming from a small town in Assam, stunned the event in dresses that represented their local craftsmanship in globally stylish silhouettes. Mother Urmimalas' brown gown was inspired by ancient banyan trees, symbolising connection, strength, and the roots of humanity. Meanwhile, daughter Snigdha's dress was made using bamboo, an abundant plant in Assam.

Who they are

Coming from humble beginnings in Dibrugarh, Assam, Urmimala and Snigdha's presence at the Cannes red carpet was a deeply special moment for them. "From small-town girls to making history as the first-ever mother-daughter duo to walk the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, we made it!" Urmimala wrote in an Instagram post. "We are not only making our dreams come true, but also helping and inspiring other women to dream—and to fall in love with their dreams."

Urmimala is a model, pageantry mentor, and entrepreneur. Speaking to Matrubhumi, she shared that her life has been a story of immense grit and resilience in the face of hardship. After losing her husband, she raised Snigdha as a single mother and taught her to dream big. “We didn’t come from privilege. We came from persistence. That’s what got us here,” Urmimala told the outlet.

Snigdha is also a model, entrepreneur, and podcaster. Urmimala is also the national director of Mrs Universe, Miss Intercontinental, Miss World International, and Miss Europe Continental, according to her Instagram bio. Now living in Delhi, the mom and daughter are the founders of UMB Pageants.

Assam At Cannes 2024

In 2024, Assamese actress Aimee Baruah also attended the Cannes Film Festival, flaunting her roots in a muga silk saree, a traditional handloom of her state. Her saree featured intricate handwoven designs and vibrant colours typical of Assamese textiles. The saree, also adorned with a two-hundred-year-old motif, was complemented by traditional Assamese accessories such as the Gamkharu wristband, Assamese gamosa, Riha, and Kopou Phul (foxtail orchids) in her hair bun.
