Veteran actor Kavita Chaudhary, renowned for her iconic roles in the television series Udaan and as Lalitaji in Surf commercials, passed away on February 15 in Amritsar. The news was confirmed by her nephew, Ajay Sayal, who stated that Chaudhary suffered a cardiac arrest at 8:30 p.m. and breathed her last at Parvati Devi Hospital.

Anang Desai, a fellow actor and batchmate from the National School of Drama, expressed his grief, recalling their time together during training. He revealed that Chaudhary had battled cancer in the past, choosing to keep it private. Desai mentioned speaking to her just fifteen days prior, when she was in Mumbai, and expressed concern over her declining health.

He said, "I came to know this morning that Kavita is no more. She died last night. It is very sad. She was our batchmate at the National School of Drama. We studied together at NSD for three years during our training. Kavita, I, Satish Kaushik, Anupam (Kher), Govind Namdev were together in the same batch."

Chaudhary gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of IPS officer Kalyani Singh in the groundbreaking series Udaan, which she also wrote and directed. Inspired by her sister, Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, who was the second woman to become an IPS officer, the show was hailed for its depiction of female empowerment.

In addition to her acting prowess, Chaudhary left a lasting impact with her portrayal of Lalitaji in Surf advertisements of the 1980s and 1990s. Recognised for her portrayal of an intelligent and prudent housewife, Chaudhary's performance resonated with audiences across the nation.

Reflecting on her character, Chaudhary once shared that Lalitaji's persona was different from her own, but she was trusted to understand the essence of the role. The character became synonymous with smart consumer choices, embodying qualities of practicality and wisdom.

During the pandemic, Udaan was re-telecast on Doordarshan, prompting nostalgia among viewers and earning accolades from political figures like Smriti Irani, who credited the show with inspiring personal empowerment.
