The cat-and-mouse pair has long occupied legacy status in pop culture, courtesy the kind of ageless entertainment it has been catering to the young and old, since 1940.

Tom and Jerry Movie, trailer

In what is appearing to be a positive turnaround in the last remaining months of a largely awful year, Warner Bros. has announced the return of the frenemy duo Tom and Jerry in a new live-action movie. And to say that I am ballistically ecstatic at the news would be an understatement. Yes, me a 20-something chuffed over a half-animated cartoon film. Don't judge me because this is a perfectly normal reaction for anyone whose childhood was spent among the exploits of this cat-and-mouse pair. While the film itself is expected to release in 2021, the trailer alone has been enough to open the floodgates to a blast of childhood nostalgia.

The cast is headlined by Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse, alongside humans Chloe Grace Moretz, Michael Pena, Rob Delaney, Colin Jost, and Ken Jeong. Tom & Jerry, directed by Tim Story, is set in a grand old New York hotel where the animal duo land up, outside of their animated world. Jerry, adorable but notorious as ever, is giving the hotel staff a hard time. Kayla (Mortez) is tasked with getting rid of the rat infestation, which is when she employs Tom. And thus ensues their infamous age-old rivalry, with Jerry outwitting Tom despite the latter finding a human teammate in Kayla.

Tom And Jerry: The Timelessness Of Cartoons

Tom and Jerry are original creations of Joseph Barbera and William Hanna, American animators credited for other iconic cartoons such as The JetsonsScooby-Doo, and The Smurfs. It is generally understood that the influence of these cartoons, especially Tom and Jerry, isn't simply limited to being toddler entertainment. The cat-and-mouse pair has long occupied legendary status in pop culture, courtesy the kind of ageless entertainment it has been catering to the young and old, since 1940.

All through childhood, I remember being glued to the television whenever Tom and Jerry would be aired. I was positively obsessed with the show, so much so that I had memorised every shot of every episode by heart. And I wasn't alone in my endeavours. During my toon watch time, I was joined by my dad who was as enthralled by the cat-and-mouse chase as I was.

As a diehard fan of the cartoon duo, it thrilled me to see that the film has retained some of the most iconic scenes from the original shorts - such as Tom flying from the Flying Cat episode and the timeless trope of Jerry shifting his rat hole to have Tom hit his head on the wall.

It may seem strange for an adult to gush over fictional cartoons. But as author John Connolly once wrote, "For in every adult there dwells the child that was."
