The end of 2022 saw the release of The Kerala Story's teaser, which sparked controversy due to claims that the movie depicted false events. In a conversation with Mid-Day at the time, Shah responded to the situation and stated that they were working on a movie about an enormous tragedy. He continued by saying that if he feels compelled to convey this tale as a filmmaker, then any discussion of whether he supports the status quo or not will simply represent one person's viewpoint. As a director, he only considers stories that move him deeply enough to desire to tell them.

According to the most recent statement from the producers, the film, which was directed by award-winning filmmaker Sudipto Sen, tells the heartbreaking story of women who fall victim to a conspiracy that isn't just limited to Kerala or India. The director had previously stated that it was his patriotic duty to expose the way in which thousands of girls were converted and trafficked abroad.
