The film, "The Illegal" delves into the bleak reality of chasing the American dream. When we think of  American dream, it paints a picture of the triad of an independent, successful, and happy life that is all rolled into one. But very often we picturise the expense of turning such dreams into a reality.

Here is all you need to know about film The Illegal:

  • The Illegal, starring Suraj Sharma, Shweta Tripathi, Iqbal Theba, Adil Hussain, and Neelima Azeem, was shortlisted for an Oscar for Best Picture in 2020 and earned critical acclaim at international film festivals.
  • Hassan, played by Suraj Sharma, is the protagonist of The Illegal. He dreams of moving to the United States and making his mark in the world, despite coming from a typical Indian middle-class household. He has the strength to take the chance and dive into the unknown.
  • The film features a memorable line from Shweta's Mahi. She states to her brother Hassan that in arranged marriages, one must live one's entire life for the sake of another. Hassan's face in that moment reflects his whole life story. Immigrants who don't quite make it suffer in the same way. They do everything for their families' well-being, wishing to see them back home, all the while being abused and struggling to keep their dreams alive.
  • Despite the fact that The Illegal is Danish Renzu's second feature film, he demonstrates his directorial abilities. His message that of illegal immigrant has a personal experience comes across clearly. Their faces may be identical, but they've lived very different lives, finding common ground in the face of trials and tribulations far from home.
  • The Illegal has an insightful script and outstanding casting. Hassan is played convincingly by Suraj Sharma. We are moved by his youth's naivete, as well as his inability to break free from the vicious cycle of being undocumented. Shweta Tripathi is as charming as ever, and she adds an important layer to Hassan's plot. Iqbal Theba also nails his performance as his character. Adil Hussain and Neelima Azeem play careful but supportive parents.
  • According to a review report, in the film, there are some insightful moments. Hassan is advised that following one's dreams requires bravery, but a wise man knows when to walk away from them. Yet he hangs in there, despite the fact that his Indian spirit contrasts with the bleak truth of the American dream.
  • The Illegal portrays the lives of immigrants behind the gleaming facade, the quest for identity behind rose-tinted glasses, brilliantly. However, the film is not without flaws. Certain scenes tend to exaggerate the protagonist's difficulties, and the tempo occasionally slows. However, this heartfelt narrative about pursuing one's dreams and finding the inner strength to keep dreaming, battling, and living is a must watch.
