In Bollywood, many talented female actors often find themselves underutilised and reduced to mere eye candy in certain films. Despite their immense potential and acting prowess, they are confined to roles that prioritise their sex appeal over meaningful character development and substantial storylines. Additionally, they are frequently given meaningless characters that offer little substance or contribution to the overall narrative.

Tamannaah Bhatia In Lust Stories 2

Vijay Varma and Tamannaah Bhatia's portrayal in the segment Sex With Ex of the film Lust Stories 2 was highly anticipated, and after the release of a few trailers, it generated significant buzz and anticipation.

However, their presence in the segment, directed by Sujoy Ghosh, ultimately proved to be a disappointment and wasted the talents of these accomplished actors. Despite the director's efforts to avoid turning it into low-grade erotic content, the actors, particularly Bhatia, were primarily utilised for their visual appeal, leaving little substance to their characters or the story. The chemistry between them, including the kiss and other intimate scenes, failed to captivate the audience or establish any relatability. It was surprising to witness such poor performances from actors known for their exceptional acting skills and onscreen presence.

Here are some talented actors in Bollywood who have been underutilised or even oversexualised in certain movies.

Kangana Ranaut

Known for her versatility, Kangana Ranaut has faced instances of being oversexualized in certain films. In movies like Rascals and Double Dhamaal, her characters were reduced to mere eye candy, overshadowing her potential as an actor. In these films, Ranaut’s roles were primarily focused on showcasing her glamour and attractiveness, often at the expense of character development or meaningful storylines.

Taapsee Pannu

Taapsee Pannu, recognised for her strong and impactful performances in films like Pink and Thappad, took on a lighter and more commercial role in Judwaa 2. Pannu's portrayal in Judwaa 2 was deemed average by critics and audiences. The film primarily focused on comedy and a more mainstream approach, which limited the opportunity for Pannu to showcase her full acting range and depth as seen in her previous works.

Vaani Kapoor

Vaani Kapoor, known for delivering impactful performances in movies like Shudh Desi Romance and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, has garnered praise from both audiences and critics for her acting abilities. However, her potential was sadly underutilised in Shamshera, where she was reduced to a mere prop. In the film, Kapoor's character, Sona, solely existed as Balli's wife, lacking any substantial identity beyond that. Her role primarily involved breaking into dance numbers, offering support to the hero, and reacting with screams when the hero faced adversity.

Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt, an immensely talented actress in Bollywood, has gained recognition for her versatility and ability to bring depth and authenticity to her diverse roles. However, in the film RRR, her portrayal of Sita was primarily treated as a guest appearance. Despite being introduced as the main lead's fiancée, the amount of screen time dedicated to her character felt very limited. While Bhatt expressed gratitude for her debut in the South Indian film industry, many viewers have criticised the role as useless and lamented the waste of her talent.
